Lolly Willowes

The musical drama Lolly Willowes, adapted from Sylvia Townsend Warner’s wonderful 1926 novel*, will be premiered on April 18 and 20 at the Midtown Arts and Theater Center, Houston (MATCH). It’s the story of a London woman who is lost, alone, and perplexed. A woman caught for many years in a life she hasn’t chosen…but then something happens, something comes to her, something that perplexes her even more. A great disquiet, an energy beyond her understanding, a force that draws her out of her “Aunt Lolly” life, out into the countryside, where she discovers who she truly is, what that means, how she must claim her authentic selfhood, all the beauty and strangeness and risk of the process, and all the natural and supernatural elements at work in the drama. Lolly Willowes brings together elements of opera, musical theater, innovative chamber music, and contemporary ballet. It’s a show of mystery, mischief, spiritual puzzlement, and fun.

*Lolly Willowes is published by Virago, an imprint of Little, Brown Book Group Co.
