Theremin Fantasies
Apollo Chamber Players (Apollo) exists to create transformative art that expands the moral imagination and cultural consciousness of Houston’s ever-expanding international community. Entering our 11th season, we achieve this vision by providing innovative, multicultural concert programming which has found “fruitful territory” (Houston Chronicle).
The theremin is a relatively new instrument, having been created in 1928 and is distinguished by being a musical instrument played by not touching it. Used extensively in movie soundtracks for those spooky scenes, in this concert we explore the multicolored sound-world of this unique electronic instrument. Theremin wunderkind Carolina Eyck joins Apollo for her first ever concert in the Bayou City, with an arresting theremin-featuring septet by Czech composer Martinu and new works by Ms. Eyck for theremin and string quartet. With Elizabeth Priestly Siffert on oboe and Alejandro Barranon on piano.
