Black Art in America Fine Art Show

Your home is a major investment and you decorate it to reflect your personal style and cultural pride. You want your yard to do the same. But the garden décor at hardware stores and home retailers doesn’t come close to reflecting who you are. Where do you go to buy outdoor art featuring people of color?

The inaugural three-day Hybrid black fine art show is free and open to the public.

The show will feature whimsical, modern and vintage-inspired outdoor art pieces reflective of the African diaspora in North America and the Caribbean, as well as original fine art and limited-edition lithographs and prints by muralist John Biggers, sculptor Elizabeth Catlett, painter Reginald Gammon and other historical African-American artists.

“Many people who enjoy gardening and growing their own foods also have an affinity for Black art,” said Seteria Dorsey, co-founder of Garden Art for the SoulTM (GAFTS.) “This hybrid show introduces audiences to art that speaks to them, while showcasing nationally renowned African-American artists such as Biggers, Charles Criner, Catlett and established contemporary artists Lillian Blades, Najee Dorsey, Ted Ellis, Stefanie Jackson, Charly Palmer, Woodrow Nash and others”

The fine art show kicks off on Friday, October 27th, with an opening night charity reception, benefiting the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum and honoring local Houston culture.

The show opens to the public at 10am on Saturday, October 28th with panel discussions on art and various workshops on collecting.

The Dorsey’s, founders of Black Art in America (BAIA), created GAFTS earlier this year after they moved into a new home and encountered their own outdoor decorating dilemma. They could find the furniture and appliances they wanted at big box stores and independent shops, but not garden art that spoke to their souls and mirrored their faces.

“We wanted the outside of our home to show our love for Black art in the same way the inside of our home does,” Dorsey said. “But we couldn’t find art that represented us. So, we made our own.”

Black Art in America is a multifaceted media company and art gallery located in Columbus, Georgia that was launched in 2010. BAIA, is a website that amplifies thought-provoking commentary on today’s visual arts news from a variety of perspectives including breaking news, profiles of leading and emerging Black artists, and market trends.
