Calligraphy in Islamic Art: A Workshop at Asia Society Texas Center
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents Calligraphy in Islamic Art: A Workshop at Asia Society Texas Center. Islamic calligraphy—developed from Arabic writing that predates Islam—is used as a marker of religious and intellectual cultivation, and to inscribe the word of God through the Qur’an. The art form has matured as a communicative script and is also used in an artistic manner to create calligraphic works, as well as decorations for mosques and objects.
Enjoy hands-on instruction in the dynamics of traditional writing tools, and learn how to write Arabic alphabets in a classical style. This workshop takes place in conjunction with the Asia Society exhibition Wondrous Worlds: Art & Islam Through Time & Place. Participants receive free same-day admission to the exhibition.
