“I’m Still A Woman”

Houston Play On Purpose and Playwright Holly Charles present the episodic stage play I’m Still a Woman, exploring the prevalent, yet taboo topic of infertility in women of color. Showing at Midtown Arts & Theater Center (MATCH – 3400 Main) on Saturday, August 25th, 2018, HPOP hopes to shape and change the way fertility is perceived within the African and Hispanic Diasporas.  After the success of last year’s production In All Thy Getting: The Forgotten Story of Freedmen’s Town, which debuted at The Ensemble Theatre June 2017, Charles was led to start a boutique, non-profit theater company which will continue to focus on issues impacting underserved and minority populations.

I’m Still a Woman is an episodic performance made up of eight monologues from women of color confronting the topic of delayed motherhood, as well as the expectations, timelines and social constraints which often hinder the emotional welfare of women.  The intimate account of each character sheds light on the increase of Black and Latina women in education and business, misconceptions concerning infertility, as well as statistics concerning dating and marriage culture in minority communities. Each woman embraces her journey to motherhood, whether by way of proactive health care, fertility assistance, adoption or other acts of faith, by first proclaiming the piece’s title, “I’m Still a Woman”.  The opening production (3pm), hosted by the Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals (HAULYP) will conclude with a Panel and Q&A featuring experts from the Houston Fertility Institute, Texas Adoption Resources Exchange, as well as playwright Holly Charles, M.A. Joining our efforts to inform and combat the stigma of infertility, they will be available with pamphlets and a wealth of expertise to assist women beyond each show’s conclusion.
