La Vida Es Cortos / Life Is Shorts Festival!

TEATRX is bringing back La Vida Es Cortos / Life Is Shorts! They are delighted and thankful to bring back the only festival that showcases short plays and short films side by side. In its third year, the festival will evolve by including dance theatre performances and short dance films to create a Latinx multidisciplinary experience never seen before.

TEATRX will produce four short plays chosen from a nationwide call for plays. TEATRX Founding Artistic Director, Benito Vasquez will direct “Breaking the Binary” by California-based Angela Estela. TEATRX Co-Founder Marissa Castillo will direct, “Don’t Quit” by recent UH grad Rebecca Dominguez. Laura Moreno, a veteran LVEC director, will mount “Carlotta Learns to Whistle” by native Texan Josie Nerricio. Finally, Candice D’Meza will make her TEATRX debut directing “The Future is F*****” by Adrienne Dawes, an Afro-Latinx playwright originally from Austin, Texas and a member of the Dramatist Guild.

TEATRX continues the tradition of bringing Latinx theatremakers together. This year’s festival includes a new collective of past participants, Tres Tristes Teatreras performing “Vol?”, an original Spanish absurdist play by Puertorican and TSU Professor Rosarito Rodriguez. In addition, TEATRX welcomes back previous participants including Teatro Pedro who will perform the Spanish language dark comedy “Luto en la Familia” by Rafael Mendizabal and Adam Castaneda of Dance Pilot Project will choreograph an original dance piece performed to Norte?o music and traditional Mexican ballads.

This year’s festival will screen seventeen short films ranging from four to seventeen minutes that cover a range of genres. Films will be split between three performances Friday and Saturday. Following each performance, the audience will vote on their favorite film. The top films will be featured at the final performance on Sunday, November 28. This year the winner of Audience Favorite Film will win a cash prize!

La Vida Es Cortos/Life Is Shorts Festival is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
