Nine-Patch Quilt Workshop

Join HCCC and Leslie Abrams from The Community Artists’ Collective’s Jubilee Quilt Circle to learn the fundamentals of quilting and make a nine-patch quilt pillow inspired by the summer exhibition, Made to Last: The Legacy of the Jubilee Quilt Circle.

The nine-patch quilt block is one of the best blocks to learn if you’re new to quilting. One of the earliest forms of patchwork, this block involves joining nine squares of fabric to form a larger square, and it is one of the most recognized quilt blocks in the quilting world. In its simplest form, the block is constructed of nine plain squares of fabric. But the nine-patch lends itself easily to endless variation, because each of the nine squares may also be made up of numerous smaller pieces sewn together.

You can choose to hand sew your pillow or use a sewing machine. If you have a sewing machine, it is strongly recommended that you bring it. If you don’t have a sewing machine and would like to use one, please email education@crafthouston.org. A limited number of machines can be loaned for the day of the workshop. Fabrics will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their favorite 100-percent cotton fabrics (at least half a yard of each fabric is needed for this project).

Participants will design, cut, and sew one nine-patch quilt and learn tips to continue their quilting practice at home. The quilt can be made into a pillow or serve as the start of a larger quilt. This workshop includes a lunch break from 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Feel free to bring your own lunch to eat in the classroom or in HCCC’s Craft Garden.

**About the Community Artists’ Collective**
Serving as an educational and cultural link among African American artists and all communities, the Community Artists’ Collective has made quilting and sewing an important part of their programming. In 2007, they officially named The Jubilee Quilt Circle as a regular program, open to anyone interested in learning or sharing their quilting, knitting, crocheting, and/or embroidery projects. In addition to hosting weekly meetings, the Circle promotes the legacy of African American quilting (a longstanding tradition, with roots in Africa) through workshops, art fairs, and community outreach.

Note: This event is subject to change or cancellation in response to current COVID-19 conditions. The workshop takes place in person and inside the HCCC building. Space is limited to a maximum of 15 participants.
