The Road Home
International Voices Houston, the city’s premier multicultural choir, presents a dynamic program of music exploring the winding pathways that lead us to a place of comfort and refuge. The highlight of this program is the regional premiere of British composer Cecilia McDowall’s Everyday Wonders: The Girl From Aleppo. This stirring cantata for chorus, violin, and piano tells the extraordinary story of Nujeen Mustafa, a Kurdish teenager with cerebral palsy forced by war to flee her home along with her sister, who pushed her wheelchair all the way from Aleppo to Germany. The piece features a variety of musical motifs, including Middle Eastern rhythms and tones, with the sections alternating between spoken chants, four-part harmonies, body percussion, and more. International Voices Houston is proud to present this not-to-be-missed work to the Houston area audience as part of a program, The Road Home, which focuses on the different ways world cultures address the concept of “home.”
