“Transcending Borders: The Ramayana Project” – a cross-cultural dance theater production

Conceived by Samskriti’s Artistic Director Rathna Kumar, “Transcending Borders: The Ramayana Project”, lives up to its title. The Ramayana, an ancient Hindu epic, unfolds before us through the dance and music of three Asian countries – Muslim Indonesia, Buddhist Sri Lanka and Hindu India, bringing together three distinct cultural traditions in a harmonious artistic collaboration, going beyond linguistic and religious boundaries. Art rises above all borders and makes this a uniquely beautiful presentation.
“The Ramayana Project” has been specially ‘created’ for the Asia Society Texas Center, and involves the Gamelan of the New Moon musical ensemble, Mey Lee and the M Dance Production group, Saliya Ilamnkoon and his SaLaRu Sri Lankan Dance Academy, Rathna Kumar’s Anjali Dance Company, and Indian musicians Abhishek Balakkrishnan (music composer and violinist) and Naga Srinidhi Kuruvada (percussion).
The world premiere of Samskriti’s newest cross-cultural production will be held under the auspices of the Asia Society Texas Center at its premises on Southmore Blvd on Saturday, August 5, 7 pm.
